The cards were found in the Topkapi Seray in 1939, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. In a book written by Leo A. Mayer, Mamluk Playing Cards,he had theorized that there were five suites, but this was later discredited. It has been dated to the 15th century, before the Mamluk empire was swallowed up by the Ottoman empire.
