A coronation cloak everyone would like to have

Roger of Sicily’s coronation cloak, dated 1133.

Heavy red silk embroidered with gold thread (with a lot of couched work), cloisonne enameled plaques and thousands of pearls. The design is a Middle Eastern design of a lion attacking a camel, and a palm tree of life down the centre with arabic along the hem of the cloak. It is the arabic description that gives us the year, but in the 14th century it was thought to have been Charlemagne’s!
